CALIFORNIA LICENSEES / NEW LIFE, ANNUITY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2025

Summary:

Effective January 1, 2025, California licenses must satisfy new life insurance and annuity training requirements. Find the approved courses on the California Department of Insurance website.

Note:
  • Applications submitted on or after the training effective dates will be rejected if applicable training requirements are not satisfied.
  • There is no reciprocity. NAIC and other state training requirements will not satisfy these requirements for non-residents or residents.
These requirements:
  • Apply to all resident and non-resident licensees.
  • Are generally governed by type of product and dates of license and renewal.
Product/License: Whole Life, Universal Life, Variable Life, LTC-Life Hybrid, Worksite, BOLI or COLI
  • Requirement: Producers licensed after January 1, 2024, must complete a new, four-credit-hour training course prior to any solicitation or sale of any permanent life insurance policy.
    • This requirement applies to any application submission on or after January 1, 2025.
    • This requirement does not apply to sales of term policies.
    • Producers licensed in California prior to January 1, 2024 are exempt from this training requirement.
Product/License: Variable Life (license renewals)
  • Requirement: Producers selling variable life insurance must take a new, two-credit-hour variable life training course prior to their next license renewal and subsequent renewals.
Product/License: Annuities
  • Requirement: All producers selling annuities must take a new, eight-credit-hour Best Interest training course that supersedes the current required course. Producers licensed on or after January 1, 2025, must take this training prior to solicitation of any annuity contract on or after January 1, 2025. Producers licensed prior to January 1, 2025, must complete this training by July 1, 2025.

  • Requirement: Producers selling annuities in California must complete new, four-credit-hour training prior to their next license renewal and subsequent renewals.
